Turning Tragedy Into Hope For Others

A Lifesaving Mission with Love, Compassion, and Dedication

As the devastating rates of suicide continue to rise in the United States, Service Dogs Saving Lives (SDSL) has embarked on a heartfelt and dedicated mission to provide solace and hope to those suffering from mental health challenges. This lifesaving organization, founded in memory of Joseph Johnson, aims to reduce the epidemic of suicide through the support of service dogs trained to assist individuals with mental health challenges and prior suicidal tendencies.

The inspiration for SDSL started in 2010 while doing volunteer work through the Salute Military Golf Association. Witnessing wounded veterans coming off the transport bus with their service dogs at a Maryland golf course provided the first-hand evidence needed to fuel our desire to help others suffering from mental and physical pain. Having access to their service dogs was a life-changing and life-saving gift to those physically impaired and/or traumatized men and women.

By 2021, we were actively participating in fundraising events benefiting veterans in need of a service dog. America’s Warrior Partnership documented in 2022 that over 20 veteran lives were lost daily to suicide. Our vision became clear that the service dog approach was the right direction to satisfy our need to help others.

Since that time, we have been able to partner with service dog training organizations with remarkable track records. When they match service dogs with veterans and first responders, recipients’ lives improve dramatically, creating a ripple effect across the entire family. That is why SDSL’s mission is powered by its partnership with exceptional service dog training organizations. This management plan enables SDSL to focus on raising funds for scholarships and service dogs while allowing the partner organizations to concentrate on training and selecting deserving individuals.

The profound impact of a service dog on a person’s life and those surrounding them is undeniable and is supported by powerful life-saving data. However, aside from data, we also know in our hearts that when an individual in need receives a service dog, their physiological and psychological life is permanently and immeasurably changed. For these reasons, Service Dogs Saving Lives has become our life mission.

Founded after the tragic loss of Joseph to suicide, SDSL strives to honor his memory and prevent further heartbreak for families impacted by mental health issues. Granted nonprofit approval in 2022, the organization’s core values center on the belief that all lives are of value, and the loyal companionship of a service dog can significantly improve the quality of life for those battling depression, PTSD, bipolar disorder, and anxiety.

SDSL’s mission is powered by its partnership with exceptional service dog training organizations, enabling SDSL to focus on raising funds for training scholarships and service dogs while allowing their partners to concentrate on training and selecting deserving individuals. The profound impact of a service dog on a person’s life is undeniable — with data from partner organizations showing that the incidence of suicide and mental health complications among veterans dramatically decreases after receiving a service dog. With the addition of a service dog to the family, wellness, and engagement may occur in psychosocial health and functioning.

The organization’s commitment to saving lives extends to veterans, first responders, and individuals in society who often fall through the cracks in the mental health field. SDSL seeks to change lives for the better by offering hope and empowerment through the unique bond between a service dog and its owner.

Donors to SDSL can take pride in knowing that their contributions directly support the breeding, training, and matching of extraordinary service dogs to individuals with specific needs. Additionally, donations fund scholarships for training recipients with their service dogs. Through the generosity of donors, SDSL continues to combat the staggering statistics of suicide, with over 130 suicides occurring daily in the United States, and 20+ of these being veterans, according to America’s Warrior Partnership.

As a testament to Joseph’s legacy, SDSL invites you to join its fight for life by donating to its cause. Our goal is to narrow the backlog of deserving individuals waiting for a service dog at our partner organizations, every donation helps to change lives by pairing these loyal companions with those in need. Service dogs provide stress relief, social connections, unwavering loyalty, and a renewed sense of independence to their owners through this special bond.
