How Service Dogs Save Lives: Help Stop Another Family’s Tragedy Service Dogs Saving Lives (SDSL) was born from heartbreak — and built on the belief that no family should ever endure the pain of losing a loved one to suicide. Founded in honor of Joseph Johnson, SDSL carries forward a lifesaving mission: pairing highly trained service dogs with veterans, first responders, and individuals facing severe mental health challenges. Every dog placed is a second chance. A stabilizing presence. A lifeline. Across our partner organizations, not a single matched hero has been lost to suicide — a statistic that speaks louder than any fundraising speech ever could. These dogs change physiology, psychology, connection, and hope. They save lives. But the need is massive. The waitlists are long. And every day in the United States, over 130 families lose someone to suicide, including more than 20 veterans. SDSL Santa UTC Parade The holiday spirit met heartfelt purpose at the University Town Center’s Santa’s Grand Arrival Parade on Saturday, November 8, 2025, where Service Dogs Saving Lives (SDSL) proudly marched alongside veterans, families, and local heroes. Cocoplum Cars & Coffee – September 7, 2025 Service Dogs Saving Lives was honored to be the charity of choice at the Cocoplum Cars & Coffee in North Port, hosted with the support of Benderson Development. This well-attended community event brought together neighbors and friends for a morning filled with great music, Panera coffee, and a stunning lineup of cars—everything from classic vintage beauties to creatively tricked-out showstoppers. Guests also had the chance to hear from founders, Paul and Linda Johnson, who shared the life-saving mission of Service Dogs Saving Lives and their commitment to supporting first responders and veterans through the gift of highly trained service dogs. A heartfelt thank-you goes out to the car enthusiasts who came together in support of our cause—and especially to the owners of the amazing custom car featured at the end of the video clip. A Night of Hope: Supporting Mental Health & Heroes Service Dogs Saving Lives (SDSL) hosted its second annual A Night of Hope on Saturday, Jan. 25, 2025, to a full house. The evening was filled with excitement from start to finish. Linda and Paul Johnson shared their journey of transforming a personal tragedy into a source of hope for others after losing their son to suicide in 2015. They work to raise funds for two partner organizations that provide highly trained service dogs free of charge to individuals with a history of self-harm who often face mental health challenges. The Johnsons’ message emphasizes the importance of supporting our families, neighbors, and communities in addressing the epidemic of suicide. Over the past two years, they have given away five highly trained service dogs and raised over $100,000. Service Dogs Saving Lives (SDSL) aims to provide 5 to 10 service dogs annually, with a fundraising goal of over $200,000 annually. Last night, they kicked off the year by raising over $20,000 at their life-saving event. Paul and Linda are deeply grateful to everyone who has supported their mission to help veterans, first responders, and others in need. They firmly believe that individuals who have protected our communities and country deserve proper care, and our responsibility is to support them.
